Color Change Garnets are very unique stones. The color change in seen when viewing the stone in incandescent light comparted to daylight or florescent light. While every garnet does display some color change, these are pronounced. I basically have 2 types, the first change from a redish to bluish color, and the others go from a pink bronze to golden brown. The hardness of garnets is 7 to 7.5, and Garnet is the birthstone for January.

Grading System Used
Color is the most important and complex to grade. Color is made up of three components, hue, saturation and tone. Color will be graded on a scale of 1 to 10 taking these three factors into consideration.
Clarity is graded on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being loop clean under a 10X loop.
Brilliance - will be a combination of Cut, Sparkle, light return, Proportion and Crystal. Graded on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the best.
Total Quality Rating - Is the combined score of these 3 with a possible best score of 10

Gem 1034 - Color Change Garnet - 1.47 ct. This stone is from the new find in Taita-Taveta area in Kenya. The stone has the look of an alexandrite, with a color change going from a teal blue green in daylight to a purplish color in incandescent. I had a heck of a time trying to photograph this as my normal lighting set up is color balanced between daylight and incandescent. The first photo is shot with these bulbs, and it shows both the purple and blue color. In pure incandescent, you don't see any of the blue color. The next photo was shot just with a florescent light, and the stone looks more green with this light than in daylight, where it's a teal blue/green. This is a pretty dark stone, which does show brighter in florescent and daylight, however the color change is very good. I'm thinking it's more of a collectors stone, than one geared for typical jewelry. The stone measures 6.695 across the flats.

Gem 944 - Color Change Garnet - 3.14 ct. This is a nice color change garnet from Kenya. The stone is cut in a diamond checker crown that is an oval which will fit into a 4 prong round mounting. The color changes from a red/purple to a purple/blue color. The photo here is shot with Solux bulbs that are a halogen bulb that is a warm daylight color balance, so the color is about the half way point for it's change, going more red in incandescent light, and more purple/blue in daylight. Priced at only $300 per ct. this stone measures 11.4 x 9.2 mm and is loop clean.
